Yeovil Town secured their fifth summer signing with the arrival of James Bailey yesterday.
Announced via a Countdown Conundrum the ex-Crewe/Derby/Barnsley/Carlisle man has signed a two-year contract with the Glovers.
Darren Way told the official website that his midfield three was now complete.
“The midfield jigsaw is now complete and we have a few finishing touches to make elsewhere. I’ve been chasing James all summer and negotiations have been going on since the season finished, so to get him signed on and committed to the green and white cause is fantastic for the football club.”
When you look at the 28-year-old’s career path, there are some interesting twists and turns. After finishing up with Lee Johnson’s Barnsley in 2015 he decided to join FC Pune City in the Indian Super League. Notable members of the squad that season included Didier Zokora, Adrian Mutu, Tuncay and Nicky Shorey…
After eight appearances for Pune City, Bailey took himself to Canada to join the Ottowa Fury. After one season in the NASL Bailey rejoined English football and finished off the 2016-17 season with Carlisle. He was offered a new contract with the Cumbrians but, obviously, opted to join Yeovil Town.
Perhaps Bailey, having done his globetrotting, will fancy settling down a while in Somerset now and helping Yeovil Town climb the table. In his first interview with the official site he said: “I don’t see why we can’t make the play-offs. The manager has that desire, and we need the same desire as players. I’m just looking forward to getting going more than anything. The gaffer attracted me with what he wants out of the players, the formation that he’s playing and how attacking minded he wants us. It just seemed promising to me.I remember playing against them and they pressed very high, the forwards were bombing all the time attacking and pressing, and I’m just looking forward to getting going more than anything.”
Welcome to Yeovil Town Football Club James and good luck!
The squad is up to 14 now. Local media have suggested that there will be a couple more contracted signings and the rest of the squad will be made up of loan signings. There seems to be gaps upfront and at right back and backup in the midfield. On yesterdays blog I was hopeful that Darren wouldn’t gamble on a small squad after what happened last season but the suggestion is he’s going to work with a squad of 21/22.
The media department at Huish Park pulled off another viral hit yesterday with their of Bailey’s signing. So far we’ve seen the Snapchat Map, a gif of the Huish Park steps and yesterday’s Countdown Conundrum. It’s fair to say they’re going to have their work cut out if they want to top the previous announcements.
On a more serious note – it’s an example of young and new energy in the media department at Huish Park (which I hasten to add – it had in spades before!) that other areas of off-the-pitch could sorely do with having.
